16th anniversary of the death of Sr. Dorothy Stang (SNDdeN)

This was held at Notre Dame Girls’ Academy, Amoyo on February 18, 2021. It was led by the Principal of the school, Sr. Rita Ezekwem (SNDdeN).

Opening song: the song used was “I the Lord of sea and sky”

Scripture Reading: This was taken from Deuteronomy 28:1-6 and was read by one of the associates of SNDdeN, Mrs. Afolayan

Reflection: This was led by the Principal of the school

Commitment pledge: This was done by all the staff, students, associates present and the SNDdeN Sisters at NDGA, Amoyo.

Commemoration: For the fact that NDGA, Amoyo is in the semi-arid zone of Nigeria which is at present faced with isolated issues of desertification, the school summed up the anniversary celebration with the planting of trees, a sign of our commitment to the care of the earth same as the virtues Sr. Dorothy Stang upheld.

The planting of trees was done sequentially by: – the principal (Sr Rita Ezekwem, SNDdeN), management staff of NDGA, staff members at NDGA, Amoyo, NDGA-PTA, the various classes (JS 1 – SS 3)

Notre Dame Academy Enugu, joins Notre Dame de Namur worldwide to hold prayer service in memory of Sr. Dorothy Stang’s 16th anniversary of her martyrdom on February 12, 2005, and calls her staff and students to continue to make great efforts to care for our environment and save our planet.

Sr. Dorothy Stang was murdered fighting for the indigenous people of Amazon in Brazil.

“Together we can make a difference bringing peace, joy, care, love to our world that is losing sight of our guiding star-the goodness of the good God” Sister Dorothy Stang.

The school community reflected on Dorothy Stang’s life and witness, and took a pledge of commitment to protect God’s creation, to heal injustice and discover new beauty every day in God’s creation.

May we all continue to grow in our respect and care for all creation.

The good God has constantly been good even at this point in time, when COVID-19 has limited us from having our life chapter and school system running smoothly, things are no longer the same. Though COVID-19 might be a heavy burden on the world, we should remember that, it is not the weight of a burden that breaks us but how we carry it. I will say that the best way to carry it is by listening to all government instructions, especially from the heads, the leaders, so that we all can be protected. Least I forget, the sisters (religious), should be protected also, because they have got strength of thousand armies and magnifies thousand smile.
